While campaigning in Iowa last month Rick Santorum got into an argument with a student over health care. The student stated the fact that 50 to 100,000 uninsured Americans die each year due to a lack of healthcare (taken from a 2009 Harvard study). Santorum rejected the study and claimed “People die in America because people die in America. And people make poor decisions with respect to their health and their healthcare. And they don’t go to the emergency room or they don’t go to the doctor when they need to.”
Santorum is what you might call “compassionate.” He has stated that people who can’t afford health care should stop whining about the high costs of medical treatments and medications and spend less on non essentials like cable and cell phone bills. He also has no problem with insurance companies denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. At least he’s consistent with being an asshole.
